The Wisdom of Diligence

Scripture:“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” — Proverbs 21:5
My sister-in-law asked me to attend a weekly strength training session with her and a few friends. Knowing my extreme distaste for working out, she probably deserves extra credit for even asking, but when she did, saying yes came surprisingly easy.
Now, don’t get me wrong, my body was strongly urging me to say no. But I thought it would be a great opportunity to spend time with her while doing something healthy.
When we arrived at the workout facility, I was slightly concerned I might embarrass myself if extensive cardio was involved. I pictured myself sounding like a broken down steam engine trying to climb a mountain. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised to learn cardio would be minimal.
We started slowly with stretching, and the trainer eased us into several strength and conditioning stations. He was encouraging throughout the workout and seemed to know exactly when to push us.
At the end of the session, the trainer asked how we felt things went, what we wanted to see more of moving forward, and if there was anything we hoped to avoid. Then he asked a question that caught me off guard:
“What do you want to get out of these sessions?”
I hadn’t really given that much thought. After committing to attend, I simply planned to show up. I knew I had said yes, but I hadn’t considered what I actually hoped to accomplish.
As I reflected on that question, I realized how often we move through life the same way.
We enter situations, routines, and even seasons of life without clearly defining what we want the outcome to be. We go through the motions without much intentionality. Or perhaps we set vague, generic goals that sound good but aren’t goals we’re truly committed to pursuing.
Some goals may seem obvious.
The goal of going to the gym is to get healthier.
The goal of going to work is to earn income to support yourself or your family.
The goal of going to college is to further your education.
But today’s scripture reminds us that diligent planning matters.
God calls us to be intentional. He calls us to think carefully, plan wisely, and pursue goals with purpose instead of rushing ahead impulsively.
We should ask ourselves:
What specifically am I trying to achieve?
How will I know when I’ve reached this goal?
Is this goal realistic?
What timeframe am I working within?
Have I invited God into this process?
Once we’ve answered those questions, we need to take our plans before the Lord, asking for His wisdom, guidance, and direction.
When we ignore the first part of Proverbs 21:5, we often end up living out the second half. We rush ahead, make hasty decisions, and wonder why things don’t produce the results we hoped for.
It’s much like going to the grocery store without a list. You may leave with a cart full of things that caught your attention, only to realize you forgot the very things you actually needed.
Without intentionality, distractions will always compete for our focus.
God desires for us to live with purpose, not hurried, distracted, or reactive, but prayerful, thoughtful, and diligent in how we plan and move forward.
Reflection:Are there areas of your life where you’ve been going through the motions without clear purpose or direction? Have you been making rushed decisions without seeking God’s wisdom first? Today, take a moment to evaluate your plans, goals, and priorities. Invite God into the process and ask Him to help you move forward with diligence, wisdom, and intention.
Prayer:Lord, thank You for caring about every detail of my life. Forgive me for the times I rush ahead without seeking Your wisdom or making plans with intention. Help me to be diligent in the way I think, plan, and move forward. Give me clarity about the goals and priorities You have placed before me. Teach me to seek Your guidance in every area of my life so that my plans align with Your will. Help me to live with purpose, wisdom, and trust in You.
Amen.
