Scripture
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3
Commit Your Plans to the Lord
A few weeks ago, my son called to talk with me about an unexpected opportunity that had come his way. It wasn't a direction he had ever considered pursuing, but the nature of the offer caused him to pause and wonder if it was something he should seriously consider.
My initial response was practical. I suggested he write out a list of pros and cons to see if that might provide some clarity. The next morning, however, I felt the Lord gently prompting me to reach back out and offer a different piece of advice.
I told my son that the best thing he could do was first commit the decision to the Lord and ask if this opportunity was from Him. I encouraged him to pray for wisdom, seek God's direction, and ask for the courage to step forward in faith if that was where God was leading him.
How often do we make life changing decisions without truly including God in the process? We make plans, weigh our options, and move forward, only asking God to bless the decision after it has already been made. Instead of aligning our choices with God's will, we often make our choices first and hope we can fit God into them afterward.
Proverbs 16:3 gives us a different approach. It reminds us to bring our plans, opportunities, and decisions before our Heavenly Father first. We are to seek His wisdom, ask for His guidance, and trust Him to establish the path He wants us to take. Then we must patiently wait in faith for His direction.
Sometimes God places opportunities before us that we never would have considered because He is leading us somewhere new. Other times, He allows opportunities to arise because He wants to see whether our first response will be faith and dependence on Him rather than our own understanding.
As believers, we should strive to make prayer our first response rather than our last resort. Before reacting, deciding, or moving forward, we should pause and seek God's presence and guidance. When we commit our plans to Him, He illuminates the path before us and helps us walk in step with His purpose for our lives.
Reflection
What decision, opportunity, or uncertainty are you facing today? Have you truly committed it to the Lord, or have you already decided what you want to do? Take time to place it before God and trust Him to guide your next step.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for going before me and making the crooked paths straight. Help me to bring every decision, opportunity, and plan before You first. Give me the wisdom to recognize Your direction, the patience to wait for Your guidance, and the courage to follow wherever You lead. May my plans always align with Your will for my life.
Amen.
